John Sullivan, MD, is Professor of Pediatrics, Program in Molecular Medicine, and Director of the Office of Research for the UMass Medical School. He has had a long-term interest in clinical trials and participated in the discovery and development of the first FDA approved non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, nevirapine. Dr. Sullivan pioneered the use of nevirapine for the prevention of maternal-to-infant transmission of HIV-1, a treatment now being implemented throughout the developing world. Dr. Sullivan is the recipient of the Anglo-American Travel Fellowship of the Arthritis Foundation, the University of Massachusetts Distinguished Professional Public Service Award In the Best Interests of the Children, and the Manuel Carballo Governor’s Award for Excellence in Public Service. He has served on numerous NIH study sections and on the Council of the Clinical Immunology Society. He is collaborating with us to develop methods for prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission in Africa.
