James Smith, PhD, member of the Novel Devices and Vaccines, Preclinical Evaluations Team. The group led by Dr. Smith has pioneered studies using intravaginal rings (IVRs) to evaluate safety and efficacy in non-human primates (NHP). The laboratory branch in the Division of HIV and AIDS Prevention at CDC has also pioneered the development of the repeat low dose challenge model in NHPs and has expanded its expertise to include the evaluation of topical microbicides to prevent transmission of HIV. Auritec Pharmaceuticals is collaborating with Dr. Smith to test a tenofovir IVR in the low dose challenge model of HIV in NHPs.
